Principal's Message

principal smith

I am Ty Smith, the principal at Reid High School, and I am excited to serve this learning community. This is my twenty-fifth year in LBUSD, and within these years, I’ve held various positions in the Long Beach Unified. I started out as a college aide, then I taught for twelve years, I was a pathway facilitator for a year, and this is my twelfth year as an administrator. I am passionate about education, and my goal is always to help students and families in whatever capacity is needed. I am enthusiastic about starting a new school year and embracing the changes taking place at Reid, including being co-located with the district’s Independent Study High School. This summer, EPHS (Educational Partnership High School) was relocated from its location on Cedar Avenue, to our campus on Willow Street.

In order to provide students with a rigorous curriculum and to prepare them for postsecondary success, Long Beach Unified School District has adopted Edgenuity for the core curriculum for Reid. Edgenuity courses are standards-aligned, interactive, and highly engaging. In order to promote success, teachers are available to provide support for students as needed. This is a shift from what Reid has been historically, but I am confident that we will be prosperous as we navigate this new road.  Our goal is to meet students where they are and provide them with the resources and tools that they need to be accomplished in high school and beyond. I am looking forward to leading Reid and providing our students with the tools needed to succeed.
